Compact Fluorescent & LED Energy Efficient Light Bulbs
Energy efficient lighting is an essential part of a green home. Most standard light bulbs and fixtures are incredibly wasteful, but now, you can light your space effectively and efficiently.
Compact fluorescent lighting (CFL) uses less than a quarter of the power that incandescent house lights use, while providing the same brightness. They have a much longer lifespan, lasting up to ten times longer, and they maintain a cooler temperature.
A 13-watt CFL bulb emits light equivalent to a 60W incandescent and can be purchased at the same price, a mere $3-$4 per bulb. These lightbulbs are compatible with most light fixtures and have a lifespan of more than 6,000 hours-meaning you won’t need to change them nearly as often as you are used to.
Light Emitting Diode, or LED lights are able to function better on DC power than CFLs, even on low voltage systems. They come in alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) models. These lights boast of a lifespan of more than than 60,000 hours, they are mercury free and easy to recycle.
LED lighting gives off a directional light, so you aim it where you need light. This is a great spot-light option for applications needing a concentrated light in one area, such as porches, office spaces, or garages
Whatever your power source, switching all of your household’s lighting needs to a more energy efficient system could be the most important step you take in reducing your carbon footprint and going green.
